Meng Wanzhou, the CFO of Huawei, is under house arrest in Canada and sits at the center of US charges against the telecom giant.

Meng was arrested while transferring planes in Vancouver in December, 2018, and awaits extradition proceedings that will decide whether she faces criminal charges for fraud in the United States.

In her most recent court appearance, Meng's lawyers argued that border officials mishandled her arrest. Extradition hearings are set to formally begin on January 20, 2020.

Meng is at the center of the US's criminal charges against Huawei, which the US claims evaded sanctions on Iran by selling the country electronics that contained US parts.

Her case has also become, at times, a bargaining chip in the US-China trade war.

In late 2018, President Trump told Reuters that he would intervene in the US Justice Department's charges against Meng if it could help bring the trade war to an end.

“If I think it’s good for the country, if I think it’s good for what will be certainly the largest trade deal ever made – which is a very important thing – what’s good for national security – I would certainly intervene if I thought it was necessary,” Trump said.
