On September 26, Elon Musk tweeted that he expects AI to play a large role in social media disinformation campaigns, if they haven't begun to already:

It's not clear what prompted Musk to write this. Some suggested it may have been in response to a New York Times story about government-led manipulation campaigns worldwide.

He didn't elaborate on "anonymous bot swarms," either, though he may have meant that bot behavior and message content can tell researchers a lot about the technology used to run them.
